Spectacular sixties issue of the truly incredible Queen magazine featuring the iconic Veruschka holding a lion cub on the cover photographed by the brilliant photographer and playboy Peter Beard, in Africa.
There is an extremely rare Helmut Newton shoot that we have never seen before. It's almost a mixed genre as Newton shoots a traditional magazine interiors feature in his characteristic staged melodramatic noir style. And it features 1960’s bedsit styling with a touch of high glamour, Newton's eye and of course the obligatory troubadours guitar in the corner! It's astonishing and has possibly never seen the light of day as it’s basically a magazine editorial set-up dominated by his vision.
And its all interiors for this issue - all fascinating as the photographers are injecting drama in every image:
Two features include the actor Ben Carruthers who features in John Cassavetes film ‘Shadows’ as a secondary character. The first feature is a 6 page fashion editorial photographed by David Montgomery set in a small flat several stories up. Ben models with Jill Kennington in a very stylish pad.
The other editorial is 4 pages again with Caruthers in one image and 4 Francis Bacon paintings can be seen in two separate images in the apartment of Keith Lichtenstein, who collects Roman heads and paintings by Bacon. This is photographed by John Vaughan.
4 page editorial on Moss Brothers suits with some stunning graphic photography by Frank Horvat.
4 page feature that talks to 9 wives of a Chairman to ask them about their influence.
2 pages hair editorial interviewing Rose Evansky (haute coiffure) with a portrait by Maxplan but dominated by the illustrations of Mouchy, lovely black and white images.
2 page feature on french comedy director Jacques Tati.
3 page motoring feature by Stirling Moss as he reviews the Ford Corsair - great photographs by Chris Morris and stunning graphic use of the images across three pages, this is why Queen is such a brilliant magazine.
Tom Wolfe book excerpt ‘The Secret Vice’ 2 page feature.
ADRIAN BAILEY drawing of what Christmas food staples one needs from FORTNUM & MASON.
Clothes also in this issue by - Liberty, LIDA ASCHER, MOSS BROS, BALLY etc
A small DAVID HOCKNEY drawing shown in the arts section, which is a matt paper insert, printed in a tan brown colour. We love a magazine that utilises different stock.
Last but not least, a new PETER SELLERS discovery for collectors; a smallish photo of him in costume as he plays Paul McCartney of The Beatles! There's a full page article about the company Paul and Linda formed that is 'now worth a lot of money' and Paul bemoaning he had to go to 'boring board meetings to talk about shares and floating'!
Adverts include -
GARRARD, 2 pages of rings.
Carlton cigarettes
Excellent condition, all pages intact and tight to spine. Cover has light creasing but is bright and clean. Small strip of paper loss at top left near spine on the cover; barely noticeable. Binding is strong and colour vibrant. For a 60's magazine this is really rather good.
Post includes insurance & online tracking. Mailed with a Flyweight board in an archive sleeve. We are happy to combine orders.
