VANITY MAGAZINE Full set 1982 1989 Antonio Lopez BASQUIAT Mugler CdG
Vanity magazine; a rare complete set from the first issue in 1982 to the last in 1989.
A beautiful run, 37 issues of inspiration and ideas.
Vanity was an Italian fashion magazine that oozed originality. Not to be confused with Vanity Fair, this is a completely different title. Vanity was entirely about fashion. It only ran for 37 issues, and was published by Conde Nast Italy from 1982-1989.
All of the covers, except for two, featured illustrations, and all of the work was produced exclusively for this magazine - you won't see the artwork reproduced anywhere else, before during or since!
The first nine issues were a straight run of Antonio Lopez covers! As well as the covers, Lopez drawings feature heavily throughout.
Other artists commissioned to create cover artwork included:
Gilbert & George
Francois Berthoud, and
Mats Gustafson (who recently collaborated with Christian Dior to produce the haute couture book 'Dior').
The great and eccentric Italian Vogue stylist Anna Piaggi was one of the key editors, as well as Franca Sozzani (later EIC of Vogue Italia).
Piaggi created this magazine to showcase her favourite designers including Comme des Garcons, Chanel, Vivienne Westwood, Studio Alchimia, Thierry Mugler and Jean Paul Gaultier to name a few.
Robert Mapplethorpe contributed exclusive work for this fashion and arts magazine.
The photographic fashion editorials were shot by the likes of Bill Cunningham, Mapplethorpe, David Bailey, Roxanne Lowit, Mario Testino and Horst.
There were interviews with creatives and talent of the day, clubbing/style features, with a lot of focus on nightlife of the then contemporary 1980's including The Mud Club in London.
Karl Lagerfeld contributed many illustrations featuring Chloe, one of which is a collage created exclusively for Vanity featuring Marie Laurencin, Spandau Ballet and Antonio Lopez - pure genius!
Artists featured include Jean Michel Basquiat, William Burroughs, Robert Longo and many creatives starting their career in film, music and the arts.
Also featured within this rare set:
PIER PAOLO PASSOLINI
Vanity is one of the most sought after titles in our archive. We have been searching for copies for 15 years and in that time have only managed to create one full set. In fact we do not know of any other complete runs in the world.
Most of the text in Italian, and the artwork speaks the universal language of beauty!
The set is in excellent condition and is ready to ship in a sturdy A4 archive box.
Our website shop represents a very small taste. This is just one title from our very large collection of 70,000 vintage fashion magazines. Please ask about anything that you are looking for. The entire archive is searchable and we can lay our hands on anything we own quite easily.
