MAN RAY Pendants Pending earrings VTG TATTOOS Les Halles Sunday Times magazine
Rare 1960s issue of The Sunday Times magazines.
Fantastic cover photograph of Catherine Deneuve by Man Ray. This magazine was the very last installation piece at the recent 'Man Ray - Portraits' Exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery in London, which ended in May 2013. The Sunday Times commissioned Man Ray to shoot this portrait of Catherine to accompany a 5 page "Deneuve: The Ultimate In Understatement" interview. Several rare film and personal stills feature in this article, including a scarce photograph by David Bailey, who she had recently divorced.
It gets even better - Catherine was shot in Man Ray's studio for this photo, is surrounded by his artwork, and the gold-plated spiral earrings she wears were sold at Sotheby's for US$20,000! Man Ray's Pendants Pending earrings are large 18ct rose gold and were originally designed by Man Ray in 1961 after lampshades he had created much earlier in 1919. This rare, historically important, magazine was one of Man Ray's last images. He famously worked very little later in his life, only agreeing to assignments whenever money was tight.
Roy Castle illustrations, 2 pages, 'Village Idiocy'.
Brian Sanders illustrations, 3 pages 'Where were they then?' which looks at iconic figures' previous careers, including LEN DEIGHTON (1/3rd of a page including photo, this feature talks about his training as a steward), EDITH EVANS, EUGENE McCARTHY and GODFREY WINN.
