In this truly extraordinary original issue of Vogue from 1945, Lee Miller writes: "I was living in Hitler's flat in Munich when his death was announced" !!

Miller was a model, artist and muse of Man Ray before the war, who excelled as she led Vogue's WWII brave coverage from the front - sending stark, powerful documentary images back from Europe to be published in Vogue every month.

This is an extremely rare and historic issue of British Vogue from 1945 with a feature by Lee Miller who was with the allied troops as Hitler's house in the Bavarian Alps is burned down by the SS and looted the following day. That would have been enough of a story for most but her photography also includes perhaps the defining image of Lee Miller in a self-portrait to end all selfies - she is having a bath in Hitlers Munich flat! Miller places her military boots in the foreground and liberates the bath for the readers of Vogue! The story also includes images of Eva Braun Hitler's mistress' home in Munich.

Miller writes a riveting account of the liberation of Hitler's homes with telling details and witty observations. There has never been an article like this before or since in the pages of Vogue.

The editorial of this issue is also an inspirational call for everyone to dig deep as the war ends in Europe but continues in Japan. This issue is edited by Audrey Withers who was probably the author.

This historically important issue of Vogue also includes a rare and sought after feature about the time that the French couturier's produced doll-like mannequins to display their designs for an exhibition in Paris. Fabric was in short supply during the war and the Parisian atelier's had a meeting to discuss ways of showing their latest creations when it was not possible to host guests from around the world as each house would normally invite editors and buyers from the US, UK and around Europe. France had only recently liberated from Nazi occupation and the country could not afford textiles. Lucien Lelong was the head of the Couture Chamber and the concern was that France could be overtaken as the leading European fashion country by Germany or Austria, with seamstress, craft and trade industry and jobs at risk. Instead of models wearing the new looks on a catwalk in each designer's showroom, it was agreed that all French haute couture creators would show their key look in miniature; puppet-like dolls. The dolls where choreographed by ballet's BORIS KOCHNO and the back-drops were drawn by the illustrator CHRISTIAN BERARD and Jean Cocteau. Alongside the dolls, magazines such as Album de Figaro and GAZETTE DU BON TON were put on display. 228 27 inch dolls were made by CHRISTIAN DIOR, HERMES, LANVIN, CARPENTIER, PAQUIN, CHANEL, BALENCIAGA, SCHIAPARELLI, Balmain, Worth etc. Hosted by MICHEL DE BRUNHOFF at PAVILLON DE MARSAN at Museum of Decorative Arts, the exhibition was called Theatre de la Mode and was shown under guard.
