This very magazine published the very first story using the word "Gay" to refer to homosexuality.  The story titled "Miss Furr and Miss Skeene" was written by the great Gertrude Stein.   The writer had published it in her book of short stories the previous year, yet the Vanity Fair publication brought it to a much larger audience crowning this issue of VF as the first use of gay to relate to LGBT+!
