This is the first ever issue of The Sunday Times Magazine from February 1962. It was initially called 'The Sunday Times Colour Section'.
Supermodel Jean Shrimpton is all over the cover wearing the new Mary Quant photographed by David Bailey, with a small inset photo of footballer Jimmy McIlroy who is featured inside.
The issue is titled: 'A sharp glance at the mood of Britain' in 1962.
The city of Lincoln is looked at as a microcosm of Britain, statistically speaking. There is a photo essay by John Chillingworth and 4 page photo essay with quotes form the people interviewed about their life. The Teenager,The Widower, The Coffee bar owner...Wonderful stuff.
A look at The Changing Mood of Britain by Tom Stacey, 2 pages.
People of the 1960's: 6 people 'who represent today':
Transatlantic Jet Pilots, Michael Howlett 2 pages.
Virtuoso footballer Jimmy McIlroy 1 page with photography by John Bulmer.
Pop Artist Peter Blake 2 page interview with a self portrait painted by Blake.
The Sociologist, Dr Alan Little 1 page.
The Industrialist Mr. Selwyn Lloyd, 1 page.
Most of the photographs for this story are by Patrick Ward.
New and 'popular with the young' fashion designer Mary Quant is photographed by David Bailey and Jean Shrimpton models her clothes in a fabulous 2 page feature. Quant's partner Alexander Plunket Green also appears in the foreground of a portrait/ fashion image.
'The Living Daylights' - a new James Bond story by Ian Fleming. 5 pages
G Plan full page Danish Furniture advertisement.
*************
Good condition. It's a little worn on the cover as visible in the photograph with some tearing. The cover is partially detached at one staples, the rest of the magazine is held securely at both staples. The magazine is complete. One unrelated internal page has a 3"tear (advert with a cooking feature on reverse). This is a lightweight 50+ year old magazine and is very good for it's age.The photograph is of the actual magazine you will receive. Very extremely rare launch issue of The Sunday Times!
