Joanna Lumley photographed on the cover by HELMUT NEWTON
The is an extremely rare early 1970's issue of The Daily Telegraph supplement, only ever on sale for one day.
There is a fantastic fashion editorial by Helmut Newton shot in a Paris park with Joanna Lumley with other models. A young and dashing Lumley is featured several times. The editorial features new clothes by Chloe, Sonia Rykiel, Kenzo of Jap, Emmanuel Khanh, Cacharel and inspired by Gigi. 4 pages styled by Cherry Twiss in 'OFF A FRENCH PEG' - The couture houses remain, but French ready-to-wear has made itself a major influence on today's fashion. It's names (like Chloe and Rykiel) are now recognised here in the UK.
AS BISHOP SAID TO THE ACTRESS... - In 1924, aged 16, Ernest Bishop was engaged as a page at the Ritz. He later became restaurant receptionist. 50 years on, "as reassuringly constant as the magnificent dining-room's Louis XVI decoration", this eminence grise is considered irreplaceable by guests and management alike. 2+ pages.
HAVEN AT BREAKING POINT - Medicine and shock treatment can cure or allay severe manifestations of mental stress. But they do not remove the causes. The Arbours Association's new London Crisis Centre provides psychotherapy and "an alternative family" for people at crisis point. Adrian Bailey describes its work. Near 2 pages.
AFTER THE GENERAL, THE COLONELS? - Eighty-two and diminutive, Generalissimo Don Francisco Franco Bahamonde has now been Head of State for over 37 years. Modern Spain is very much Franco's Spain. Repression, censorship and wilyness have marked his term of office, but his people today have television and cars, and the country is prospering. In the background are the political coteries and rivals waiting for the void he will leave. Who are they and what are their chances of change? 4.5 page feature.
...AND THEY PAY A SALARY - British executives are deplorably low paid by international standards. But there is nothing particularly well worn about the Rolls-Royces in which some of them travel, nothing deplorably low about the standard of living they expect in pensioned retirement. What are the perks of the top jobs in Britain? How do they compare with those expected abroad? And are they appreciated by the recipients? 2.5 pages
These magazines were only available as a supplement to a newspaper for-one-day and were often discarded.
Dated January 1974; rare find!
