British Vogue September 1943.

The cover model is Betty McLauchlen, photographed by the great Horst P. Horst.  Betty is Robert Downey Jnr's grandmother!

The image on the cover was recently used for the cover of the book -

"Dressed for War : The Story of Audrey Withers, Vogue Editor " published in 2021 by Julie Summers.

This issue is also full of classic fashion photography by Lee Miller (played by Kate Winslett in the new film LEE), Cecil Beaton, Norman Parkinson and more.

During World War II British Vogue was kept in print as a part of the war effort. One of its influences was to encourage people to recycle and contribute paper to the war effort. They sent their archives to be pulped and had features on taking part in the war effort. As a result any British Vogue pre 1945 are some of the rarest magazines on the planet.

There is a classic WWII Wardrobe Planning feature.

Photography by LEE MILLER features in 4 separate pieces in this issue: 'Wardrobe Planning', 'Town Black', Judy Campbell (detailed below) and a small photo of a family dining outdoors at their home in Cambridge for a 'Cooking for children' feature. The first four images of our listing (other than the cover) are all Lee's work.

JUDY CAMPBELL, NOEL COWARD's understudy, is photographed by LEE MILLER and BEATON for a two page feature.  Several images at her home in WELLBECK STREET by Lee, and one at the theatre by Beaton.

NORMAN PARKINSON's classic street photos of women photographed in car and dressing mirrors is included in this issue.

CECIL BEATON travels to Turkey for a travel feature.  Then elsewhere in this issue is a fashion feature inspired by the fabrics of Turkey, shot by Beaton.  Designs include by Hardy Amies.

Bob Hope is photographed twice by LEE MILLER for a 3 page feature.  Hank Ladd and ADOLPHE MENJOU appear in the photos, all taken at an Edgeware Road venue in London.
