Rare vintage 1960's issue of the French edition of Vogue, dated 1964 November.  

COVER - Iconic Cristóbal Balenciaga coat in Ascher´s extraordinary hand-stitched "Papacha" mohair and wool tassel fabric. 
Photographed by Helmut Newton with multiple Newton fashion pages inside.  The model is Astrid Heeren.

This coat featured in the "Tom Kublin for Balenciaga. An Unusual Collaboration” exhibition curated by Ana Balda and Maria Kublin at the Cristóbal Balenciaga Museoa in Getaria.

The black version of the coat war was ordered by Mona, Countess Bismarck, who donated it to The Costume Institute at the Met in New York.

A shepherd from Spain was the inspiration for this coat.  (From the book “Balenciaga and Spain” by Hamish Bowles. Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco, Skira, 2011).

Apparently a light shocking pink version of this coat was also made.  The V&A collection in London showed a swatch in their “Balenciaga. Shaping Fashion” exhibition during 2017.
