This is the actual very first ALL BLACK issue of Vogue! Published long before the Vogue Italia 'A Black Issue' which sold out immediately on release in 2008 - and recently unearthed by us!
The last copy we had of this incredibly rare magazine was snapped up straight away - be quick if you'd also like to secure this for your museum, archive, institution, gallery, reference or collection! In over 20 years of collecting and sourcing magazines, we can count the amount of times we've found this magazine on less than one hand!
This is simply an amazing issue bristling with energy and life a glimpse into the streets and culture of the Black Americans of New York and America in 1972. It's easily one of our favourite issues and it's also fantastically rare. Full of brilliant fashion photography by Oliviero Toscani in his simple observant approach that lets the subject and their personal style shout out and grab our attention.

" L’UOMO WHY BLACK?
Who are they, where do they live, where and how do they work, how do they dress? We photographed intellectuals, politicians, artists, well-known and unknown people, people who have achieved wealth and prestige, young people who have begun their personal escalation.
We try to answer everything."

Here are excerpts:
" L’UOMO WHY BLACK?
An issue completely dedicated to the blacks of America, produced in New York. with the lens focused exclusively on this bustling community, why?
Because life in New York, and that of blacks in
particular, represents the most advanced and most evident point of an
individuality brought to exasperation. .......
And because from people of colour, from Harlem, came music, dances, fashions, crazes that they have influenced America and the world......
And because from people of colour, from Harlem, came music, dances, fashions, crazes that they have influenced America and the world......
Ambitious
and full of energy, they despise the Uncle Tom generation that preceded
them, they like to define themselves as African Americans.
Who are they, where do they live, where and how do they work, how do they dress? We photographed intellectuals, politicians, artists, well-known and unknown people, people who have achieved wealth and prestige, young people who have begun their personal escalation.
We try to answer everything."
----
In 20 years this is only our 3rd copy, the first was bought by an American museum.
L'uomo Vogue is the mens edition from Italy so was not widely available at that time.
Good condition. Ultra rare with some wear, small clippings and graffiti inside see detail photos towards the end. The back cover missing a small piece.
We have shown 2 of the 3 occurrences of graffiti, the fashion images. The 3rd is a portrait from the Sergio Braidi feature.
We have had this very rare issue before and photographed all the pages so we can say what was clipped:
The boxing feature has a small clipping which was the headline from the 'How to Discover New York' on the other side see photos. There is another small photo clipping, from later in the article, of a person walking. There is one last clipping of some ad pages early on, no editorial content lost - No photo, we are limited to 24 photos or we would show more images.
Despite the clippings and graffiti this is still an an amazing issue full of incredible fashion AND history. Priced according to scarcity and condition. The magazine is complete - all pages checked. The cover is clean and vibrant. And WHAT a cover. By it for the cover alone!
The photographs are of the actual magazine that you will receive.
