ANITA PALLENBERG Jay Jopling ORBITAL Leslie Winer DAZED & CONFUSED # 5

£150.00

Default Title

A rare early issue of the iconic style bible Dazed and Confused from 1993. This issue became notorious in the publishing world for ditching the staple celebrity-model cover image in place of a srtriking metallic cover provocatively announcing 'The Death of the Cover Star'.

A typically eclectic issue featuring a jewellery shoot shot in X-ray vision, a portfolio of Central Saint Martin’s class of 1993, and a tracklist of the music the Dazed editorial team listened to in the office.

This Vol 1, No. 5 issue, or the "Mirror" cover anticipated the era of the selfie by 20 years. See the official history (below) for more about the publication's early days, and see our photos for details of the magazine content.

HISTORY OF DAZED & CONFUSED LAUNCH
From: https://www.anothermag.com/fashion-beauty/13581/dazed-confused-magazine-history-30-jefferson-hack-rankin-katie-grand-rizzoli
The story began with a phone call. In 1991, a photographer called Rankin Waddell (then 23) rang a journalism student called Jefferson Hack (then 18) about working on the student magazine. They met up in the canteen of their university, the London College of Printing (now the London College of Communication), and immediately hit it off. Within months Jefferson had dropped out to work full-time on the project, which by that time had evolved into a zine named Dazed & Confused, after the Led Zeppelin song. “This is not a magazine,” declared the tagline on the cover of the first issue. “This is not a conspiracy to force opinion into the subconscious of stylish young people. A synthetic leisure culture is developing – plastic people force fed on canned entertainment and designer food. Are you ready to be Dazed & Confused?”

In 1991, Jefferson Hack and Rankin launched Dazed & Confused as an alternative style and culture magazine. The title became a lightning rod for cultural provocation and the magazine became a movement, growing into the agenda-setting publishing powerhouse Dazed Media.
